In the Life of a Triathlete/Firefighter

November 2011 – Why you would ever task a fellow who spends most of his time and profession living and training in the outdoors to write an article on why he loves Kansas City, I will never know. As I write, it is March and we are coming off another brutal winter. Like anyone who has lived here for more than two years, I wake up nearly daily, roll over and, at least half the time, start my day with, “Are you kidding me… again?”.

I raced Ironman triathlons professionally and still do as an “age grouper,” or amateur, and I currently work as a KCMO firefighter/EMT. Both jobs are equally impacted by the elements.

I know this much for sure: In every race I’ve ever done, I have been absolutely certain that someone with much more talent was going to beat the Speedo off of me. I was equally certain that the elements would not. You cannot live in this town without growing a thicker, tougher skin. Our idea of mild is a couple weeks in May and October; the rest of the time we deal with and live in extremes.

The Ironman in Kona, Hawaii, is the world championship of our sport. It is what started the triathlon madness back in the late ’70s and where it ends every October. In the past five years it has become nearly impossible to qualify for it. The depth and quality of athletes participating has surged; fewer than 1,500 total from every nation on our planet will get the nod this year.

You see, the lava fields, ocean and the island itself are living, breathing things that want to do nothing more than chew you up and spit you out. The 2.4-mile swim sends you straight out into the Pacific Ocean among the swells and currents. The 112-mile bike course begins with a brief climb up towards the volcano before dropping you back onto the Queen “K” highway and the northwest corner of the Big Island. And there are the “Madame Pele” trade winds, which blow from the Pacific side and gust up to 50 miles per hour.

I have seen smaller cyclists put into the ditch because they lost their focus for just a moment. It’s understandable that the mind wanders 65 miles into a day like this. I’ve felt and heard my own rear wheel suddenly skid and bounce across the road as Madame tried to end my day a long ride and marathon run short of the finish line.

Off of the bike at one in the afternoon, you start the marathon. It’s a 26.2-mile death march over some of the hottest, toughest and most humid conditions I have ever seen-outside of my hometown in July and August, that is. The race is won and lost on the marathon: Many can keep it together through that swim and bike, and most show up with a good poker face when they start the run. But all the pretenders get sorted out. Those who cannot handle the heat implode and bonk. When they do, their day is done.

Between my cousin Bob Schloegel and I, we have represented Kansas City a very lucky 13 times. We have finished in the top 10 in the world in our respective divisions in well over half of our attempts. Only I have taken longer than 10 hours, and that was on my first attempt, which I attribute to arrogance and youth.

Not many towns can say that they have had such a strong and consistent showing on the Big Island. It’s a testament to what the weather, people and temperament of Kansas City builds.

I ride and run outdoors year round. I know every stretch of every road in every direction in this city. I’ve seen them covered in ice and unplowed snow and running with cracks like spider veins in the dead of summer. I don’t know if there is a better place to train for a race like Hawaii; it takes a town like this to toughen up a kid like me.

Be my Valentine

A box of candy and flowers gives you a sense of instant gratification, but if a loved one really wants to stay in the forefront of your thoughts on Valentine’s Day and beyond, they give the gift that lasts: jewelry.

This time of year, everything is coming up roses at Mazzarese. Rose gold, that is. “Rose gold is an exciting complement to other metals, especially cool white metals like sterling or platinum,” says owner Mark Mazzarese. As an example, he shows off the way rose gold bezel links add warmth to the stainless steel band of the Serena Garbo watch by Bertolucci. “Rose gold tends to light the skin like candlelight,” says Mazzarese, “and is flattering on most coloring.” Create the romance of candlelight 24/7 with the Bergio for Mazzarese ring in 18k white gold. It features colorless diamonds set in 18k rose gold.

For the men, Mazzarese suggests Carl F. Bucherer timepieces or Montblanc writing instruments and accessories. Men of any age might appreciate a distinctive bracelet, he says. “A handmade chain bracelet in sterling silver from John Hardy is a classic and a basic for any wardrobe and lifestyle.”

Tivol marries the classics with several edgier styles from some of the most important modern designers of today. The rock star in your life might enjoy a Dagger Pendant necklace from Stephen Webster, a pair of intricate platinum Sparta Oval Cufflinks by Scott Kay or a beautiful timepiece from David Yurman, like the Belmont 41MM Automatic.

Tivol offers a beautiful collection of Mikkimoto cultured pearls. Pearls have always been a symbol of romance, and Tivol offers an impressive array of Mikkimoto cultured pearls. The symbolism of a fine cultured pearl is custom made for Valentine’s gifts: a small meaningless grain grows into a beautiful and lustrous sphere, much the same way that love evolves. Plus, if you still are yearning for something sweet to celebrate the holiday, Tivol bakes chocolate chip cookies on the weekends!

Putting a personal touch on your jewelry gift isn’t always just about engraving. Buying directly from the designer provides a one-on-one experience that can give your gift extra meaning. Walk into Arts Incubator in the Crossroads and into the studio of Cheryl Eve Acosta. Not only can you see unique, hand-crafted pieces, but you can see her copper forms in progress. Pieces like Cheryl’s “Connecting” collar/necklace blur the lines between art and jewelry. Designer Jane Signorelli travels to Saks Fifth Avenue in San Francisco three times a year for trunk shows, but she calls Kansas City home. Signorelli is inspired by stones and artifacts found all around the world, like her Jade With Fluorite Pendant. We only have to travel to outlets like EJ’s Boutique in the Prairie Village Shops and Webster House to see her stunning work. Likewise, KC Pink Dove jewelry designer Gina Saught starts her designs with a treasure hunt. She reworks vintage pieces and brings them back to life. Her one-of-a-kind work sells at Haught Style.

Truth is, beautiful and extraordinary jewelry comes in all price ranges, colors and shapes. The trick is matching the person with the right piece. Knowing exactly what someone will love is a measure of how well you are listening and how much thought you have put into the gift. Valentine’s Day is, after all, the most romantic holiday of the year.

Look No Further for a Taste of the West Coast

Look no further for a taste of the West Coast? Head to Kansas City’s Westside, where the buildings are an eclectic mix of modern and mid-century, the businesses offer things you can’t find anywhere else and the inhabitants are justifiably proud of their little piece of the world.

“My neighborhood is extremely diverse and my neighbors are some of the most creative, supportive, amusing people I’ve met in Kansas City,” says Lindsay Laricks, owner of Fresher Than Fresh Snowcones and Westside resident. “I’m lucky to be surrounded by them.”

Perhaps that is why, when Laricks was looking for a place to park her mobile snow cone trailer on Sundays, it was only natural that she turned to her neighbor, Kathy Marchant, about using the garden at 17th and Summit streets. “She was 100 percent enthusiastic about it, and I knew I had found my spot. It is sweet and charming and feels like a hidden gem. Bingo! Exactly what I was going for.” Coincidentally, “sweet,” “charming” and “gems” are all words I’d choose to describe Laricks’ gourmet snow cones.

Made from all-natural ingredients with creative flavors including pineapple and Serrano pepper, espresso Mexican cane sugar and blackberry lavender, they are quite possibly the best snow cones ever and they come in flights of five samples, so determining your favorite flavors is easy. And there will be more to sample in 2011. “I’ve been in cahoots with my good friend Gregory Kolsto at Oddly Correct Coffee,” Laricks says of her 2011 lineup. “We’ve been working on a new and improved coffee flavor using his locally roasted beans.”

In fact, local collaborations reign supreme in Westside. Perhaps best known for its vegetarian fare, Blue Bird Bistro (1700 Summit St.) has worked with local farmers for years to produce its innovative menu, which today offers entres and appetizers that appeal to omnivores, as well. During Blue Bird’s once-a-month Farmers’ Table event, your five-course dinner might include locally grown and raised treats like lamb from Campo Lindo Farms, tomatoes from the Little Muddy Farm, ricotta from Green Hills Harvest Dairy and port from Somerset Ridge Winery. The food is, of course, delicious, but it’s the company that makes the meal: Local dining takes on a new dimension when you actually get to know the farmers!

Relative newcomer to the neighborhood, The Westside Local considers its use of regionally grown ingredients important enough to include in their name. While the restaurant’s menu changes with the season, it always includes some of my favorites-delicious deviled eggs and a pint of French fries, very lightly battered and dusted with salt and pepper. The fries actually are served in a pint glass, which is both charming and effective: Since they’re not in a pile, none get greasy, and they’re good ’til the very last fry. Lill’s on 17th offers a charming patio for people watching, as well as a menu of Spanish-influenced tapas and mains. Do not miss the enchiditas, a glorious mix of spinach, cheese, pine nuts and raisins, or the avocado cream toast, both of which I have dreamed about on two occasions since eating them. Dog lovers can even take their four-pawed friends along to dinner on the patio; the staff at Lill’s will happily bring them treats and a water bowl.

Inside, Lill’s is an eclectic mix of mismatched furniture, china and linens that all comes together to create one of my favorite dining rooms in the city. Right next door, is a place where vegans can eat without having to quiz the wait staff about ingredients while wowing carnivore friends with surprisingly meat-like options. The Avocadowich (an avocado, cucumber and vegetable sandwich on cracked wheat bread) and Rainbow (collard leaf with avocado and mixed greens) are two of my favorites, but the Jack Barbeque (pan-seared and oven-roasted Jack Fruit with barbecue sauce) is a vegan option that passes muster in a BBQ city.

The best days to go to the Westside are Thursday through Saturday, when Fervere Bakery is open. The breads-some of my favorite in the city-are baked onsite in an oven the owners had built to order. Call ahead this summer and reserve a cheese slipper; they sell out fast, and paired with bright, fresh summer tomatoes and bacon, the smoky bread turns a classic sandwich into something transcendental. And then there’s Fevere’s orchard bread, which makes toast so good that it doesn’t need butter, and the grain travel, which turns getting your recommended daily allowance of whole grains into a delicious experience. Chez Elle Creperie and Coffeehouse might very well be the new hangout for francophiles.

With more than 25 savory and sweet crpes on the menu alongside wonderful coffee drinks and juices, it’s the perfect spot to meet friends for a lazy Saturday breakfast or lunch. I love the Citron crpe-lemon curd with strawberries and whipped cream-but if you’re looking for something savory, you can’t go wrong with the Tour Eiffel (salmon, capers, artichokes, cream cheese) or Le Franco (green apple, walnuts, figs and brie). When Friday night leaves you looking for a Saturday morning hangover cure, Los Alamos Market y Cocina and its bowl of menudo is just what the doctor ordered. The restaurant also offers a great bowl of posole for dinner, as well as a nice selection of street tacos and various entres like chile rellenos and carne adobada. If you can’t decide what to eat, ask what’s good: The servers won’t steer you wrong.

In truth, you really can’t go wrong anywhere in Westside. It may have the relaxed vibe and forward-thinking tastes of California, but it’s a whole lot closer to home. More to Explore Delicious food isn’t the only thing that abounds in Westside; it’s becoming the hip place to live, shop and hang out, as well: The Summit Condominiums: Sharing a building with Chez Elle Creperie, these upscale residences are hip renovations of the Summit Theatre, a silent movie house that was built in 1913 (kcsummitcondos.com). Screenland Theatre: A hip, retro venue on the very edge of the Westside (1656 Washington Ave.), the Screenland specializes in vintage and special movie showings.

In the Moment

I knew I picked the right profession when I was a summer intern at the NBC Health and Fitness Center in New York City in 1993. Early during my internship, I gave an NBC employee some nutrition advice, and two weeks later she came back and told me she had already lost weight. What an exhilarating feeling! I knew then that I definitely wanted to pursue a career in the nutrition and fitness arena.

The following summer, I had another once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become the first-ever sports nutrition intern at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Growing up a tomboy with an athletic older brother, I’ve always had a big passion for sports. Spending that summer working with Olympians shaped my career, as I gained a broad knowledge of how to fuel the world’s best athletes.

When I moved back to Kansas City in 2001, my dream came true. Years before, I had moved to San Francisco and become a registered dietician after graduating from Kansas State University with dual degrees in nutrition and exercise science. Then, as a sports nutritionist working and national spokesperson for healthy living, I landed a gig with the NBA’s Golden State Warriors.

As soon as I got back to Kansas City, I contacted the Kansas City Chiefs. Within 3 months, I was working with the team, eventually becoming their team nutritionist. Seven years ago, the Kansas City Royals called and asked me to be their team nutritionist.

Over the years, I’ve made hundreds of trips to the Truman Sports Complex to meet with Royals and Chiefs players. Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez and I especially hit it off as we worked to change his diet. Our collaboration eventually led to a book project; “The All-Pro Diet” is about how how eating “clean” is the way to go for everyone-not just pro athletes.

It doesn’t seem all that long ago that I was traveling to KC from Manhattan with my family to watch George Brett and Frank White play for the Royals. Now, at spring training the two of them will stop and ask, “How are you doing, Mitzi?”

It has been a pretty amazing ride. But it is perhaps my latest business venture that is the most fulfilling, as I help women transform their lives by losing weight and getting fit.

Based in Johnson County, Mitzi Dulan’s Adventure Boot Camp for Women draws women from as far away. We have a great time while getting fit and learning how to “eat clean” at least 90 percent of the time. And the results are just as rewarding for me as they are for my campers.

“You changed my life!” Hearing a woman say those four simple words is priceless.

Physical Stress: It Is Not Our Fault. It is our Default

Looks like we have got it backwards again.

We think our natural state of being is peaceful and calm. Then, the “noise” of life intrudes to spoil things. Other people, family demands, work pressure, bad news and the general chaos of modern living can spoil all the thrills, right?

Wrong.

Marcus Raichle, MD, a neurologist and researcher of radiology, neurology, neurobiology and biomedical engineering at Washington University in St Louis, has changed the paradigm forever. He's the medical researcher who first discovered the brain’s Default Mode Network (DMN).

A default is the setting that comes loaded in computer software and electronics. It's the font the word processing software uses unless you change it or the time and date that appear blinking on your digital clock after the electricity goes out. The default mode is the one which comes standard and preloaded.

Doctor. Raichle’s research proves beyond any doubt that the brain’s default mode is anything but quiet and peaceful. It is an sea boiling over with noise and activity. When you're not consciously engaged “when your brain is at “rest” “this is the cue for the DMN to turn on! All this activity that occurs in the DMN while the mind isn't consciously engaged in an external task is not entirely accepted, but proven to be via fMRI scans.

The DMN is your brain’s autopilot that keeps your mind occupied with a stream of consciousness, even when you do not need them. An overactive DMN leads to the following scenarios:

You lie up at night with spinning thoughts, unable to turn your mind off and sleep.

You are in a pleasant, warm shower that should be relaxing, but your intellect is speeding way ahead of you, worried about the day ahead.

You need to read concentrate on a delightful book, but can’t focus.

You are driving in traffic with a stream of boiling thoughts and emotions that irk you.

You take a pleasant walk in the park but do not enjoy the views due to your cluttered mind

You try to meditate, butforget it!

You want to hear your child or a pal, but, rather than really listen, you concentrate more on the rambling within head.

You don't consciously think distracting, worrying, disturbing or infuriating thoughts. Your brain does not need your help to form them. This is what your grey matter does in default mode!

Effective stress relief happens instantly when you learn how to deactivate your DMN. Yes, the brain network answerable for the steady stream of thoughts and bodily strain that keeps us all preoccupied and stressed out, can be deactivated. Dr. Raichle’s team discovered this by accident.

In the March 2010 edition of Systematic American, Doctor. Raichle claims the following:

In 1998 we even had a paper refused because one proof reader advised the reported decline in activity was a blunder in our information. The circuits, the reviewer claimed, were really being switched on at rest and switched off in the [cognitive] task. Other researchers nevertheless , repeated our results for both the medial parietal cortex and the medial prefrontal cortex. Both areas are now considered major hearts of the DMN.

There you have it, health articles reference a major brain network being switched on and off at will by participation in specifically designed cognitive jobs. Further research, both scientific and casual, has proven that turning off the DMN leads to elevated pleasure, inner calm, emotional well-being, improved rest, reduced hysteria and a stress-free way of being.

A Simple Overview On Astrology

The term astrology gets thrown around for a number of various things, but what is it really? According to the dictionary, astrology is the study of planets, sun, moon, and stars with a belief that they influence the course of a person’s life.

They record astronomy as an obsolete definition of astrology. This is very different for those of us that thought astrology was the research of astronomy.

Now astrology contains the sun indicators which are much more commonly known as your horoscope. In actuality horoscopes are a reading per sun sign which is based on the position of the planets, sun, moon, or stars for that day, week, or month.

Each and every person who provides horoscopes has their personal exclusive twists on writing them. The sun signs therefore are: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Your sun sign is then depending on the day that you simply had been born. Sun signs are probably the most acquainted component of astrology but not all astrologers depend on them.

The Chinese zodiac can be a aspect of Chinese astrology is used by many astrologers. As opposed to being based on the month and day like the twelve sun signs, the Chinese zodiac is based on 12 years.

The animals that represent the 12 years are a dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog, boar, rat, ox, tiger, and rabbit. Even though by utilizing only the Chinese zodiac, astrologers are missing some of the bigger components of Chinese astrology which includes the Yin and Yang.

Astrology has been around for many years and it is nonetheless quite essential in some cultures. Within common Western cultures, astrology can be a fortune telling tool or utilized to predict people’s journeys through life. Astrology is also usually utilised to establish if two men and women are compatible or exactly what sort of person someone should try to find.

As all points in life go via cycles, perhaps astrology is on an upswing and will once again become a more trusted science in the future as it was in the past.
